What’s In Your Bottled Water?

Ever wonder what dangers are entrapped in that plastic bottle of water? GH?H, P/.TL, XFsS, 123, blah, blah, blah… But what are they and how are they harmful to us? Lets start with the basics:

Bisphenol A or BPA is an estrogen mimicking chemical in plastic. It is linked to interrupting proper brain function, immune function, hormonal function, and metabolism. In a 2003-2004 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, nearly 93 percent of the people tested, age six and above, had detectable bisphenol A in their urine; females had slightly higher levels than males. If you are feeding your baby or toddler from a plastic bottle, switch to glass to avoid BPA contamination.

Phthalates make plastics like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) more flexible. Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that have adverse effects on the liver, kidney, and male and female reproductive system, especially when exposures occur to the developing organism. For example, animals exposed to phthalates in the mother’s womb have shown decreased sperm activity and concentration, early puberty in females, and testicular cancer.

Dioxin – Ultraviolet rays from the sun or high temperatures will accelerate leaching of the plastic chemicals into the water. This includes dioxin, which may also release into bottled water when it is left in the sun. Those who drink water containing dioxin over along period of time could experience reproductive difficulties and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

Play it safe and play it smart. Save money and reduce health risks by  drinking filtered tap water. To find out the status of your drinking water, contact  your water utility and request a copy from a nearby community water system.

  3. Great article. As you say, bottled water contains many contaminants, especially the plastic bottle. Therefore, drinking bottled water is not a good way to keep healthy.

    Useful information. I don’t recommend the use of bottled water. Plastic bottles may pollute the water, making it not safe to drink. RO water is a good alternative.

    I never drink bottled water because of contaminants in it and the pressure it gives to our environment. I have a water filter installed to get clean filtered water to drink and cook.
